There are many different ways to score a game. It is really all up to how you choose to do it. I will list examples of how I was taught to score a game and also show other forms of scoring the same play.

Hits

Single to LF: 1B- 7
Single to CF: 1B- 8
Single to RF: 1B- 9

Double to LF: 2B- 7
Double to CF: 2B- 8
Double to RF: 2B-9

Triple to LF: 3B- 7
Triple to CF: 3B- 8
Triple to RF: 3B- 9

Home Run to LF: HR- 7
Home Run to CF: HR- 8
Home Run to RF: HR- 9

If a ball is hit into the gap and you are unsure of how to score the part of the field where the ball was hit, here are a couple of ways to help score it:

- Which fielder actually fielded the ball or made the first attempt at fielding the ball.
- What part of the field or which fielder was the ball closer to? This usually applies to home runs. Try to use the fence as a measure or which fielder was closest to the ball when it went over the fence when scoring this play.

Outs

Ground Out to 1B: 3-1 or 3U or 3-4
Ground Out to 2B: 4-3 or 4-1
Ground Out to 3B: 5-3 or 5-4
Ground Out to SS: 6-3 or 6-4
Ground Out to P: 1-3 or 1U or 1-4
Ground Out to C: 2-3 or 2-4

Sacrifice Bunt to 1B: SBU 3-1 or SBU 3U or SBU 3-4
Sacrifice Bunt to 2B: SBU 4-3
Sacrifice Bunt to 3B: SBU 5-3 or SBU 5-4
Sacrifice Bunt to SS: SBU 6-3 or SBU 6-4
Sacrifice Bunt to P: SBU 1-3 or SBU 1U or SBU 1-4
Sacrifice Bunt to C: SBU 2-3 or SBU 2-4

Fly Out to LF: F- 7
Fly Out to CF: F- 8
Fly Out to RF: F- 9

Sacrifice Fly Out to LF: SF- 7
Sacrifice Fly Out to CF: SF- 8
Sacrifice Fly Out to RF: SF- 9

*Line Out to 1B: L- 3
*Line Out to 2B: L- 4
*Line Out to 3B: L- 5
*Line Out to SS: L- 6
*Line Out to P: L- 1

*Pop Out to 1B: P- 3
*Pop Out to 2B: P- 4
*Pop Out to 3B: P- 5
*Pop Out to SS: P- 6
*Pop Out to P: P- 1
*Pop Out to C: P- 2

Foul Out to 1B: FO- 3
Foul Out to 2B: FO- 4
Foul Out to 3B: FO- 5
Foul Out to SS: FO- 6
Foul Out to P: FO- 1
Foul Out to C: FO- 2
Foul Out to LF: FO- 7
Foul Out to RF: FO- 9

*Line Outs and Pop Outs: I was taught that you can only line out or pop out to the infield. Anything caught by an outfielder is considered a fly out. This is not the rule though. The scorer can score pop outs to the infield as fly balls. You can also score line outs however you see fit.

Examples: Fly Out to SS: F- 6/ Line Out to CF: L- 8

Fielders Choice is scored by the fielder(s) that make the out.

Example: DeWitt reached on fielder’s choice, Jones out at second- SS to 2B. Here is how that is scored: DeWitt: FC 6-4.

Caught Stealing is scored by the fielder(s) that make the out.

Example: Kemp caught stealing- C to SS. Here is how that is scored: CS 2-6.

Picked Off is scored by the fielder(s) that make the out.

Example: Kemp picked off at first base- P to 1B. Here is how that is scored: PO 1-3.

Double Plays are scored 2 different ways.

Example: Loney grounds into double play, Martin out at second- 2B to SS to 1B. Here is how that is scored: GiDP 4-6-3.

Example: Martin hit into double play, Ethier out at first base- SS to 1B. Here is how that is scored: DP 6-3. This applies to line drives, fly balls, or pop outs that result in a double play. In this example, Martin didn’t hit a ground ball or else it would have been scored like Loney’s above play.

Triple Plays are scored by the fielder(s) that make the out.

Example: LaRoche hit into triple play, Martin out at third base, Loney out at second base, LaRoche out at first base- 3B to 2B to 1B. Here is how that is scored: TP 5-4-3.

Reaching On Error

Error by 1B: E- 3
Error by 2B: E- 4
Error by 3B: E- 5
Error by SS: E- 6
Error by P: E- 1
Error by C: E- 2
Error by LF: E- 7
Error by CF: E- 8
Error by RF: E- 9
